Designer leather handbags are on every fashionista’s wishlist. They are durable pieces that elevate your look and make for an excellent investment. However, these handbags need a lot of love and care to make them last. So, if you want to keep your precious artifacts in pristine condition, follow these tips:

Start from Day One

Prevention is always better than cure, so as soon as you bring the new bag home, use a leather protection cream or spray to safeguard the piece from the outside elements. These protectors create a barrier that repels stains and delays wear and tear.

Clean Your Bag as Often as You Can

Keep your leather handbags looking as good as new by cleaning them regularly. Start with a soft dry cloth to dust the surface, use a damp cloth and give it a quick wipe down. Do this every 2-3 days.

For a more thorough job, apply a dedicated leather cleaner every few months. Better yet, ask the store assistant for their product recommendations and tips. Remember not to use anything that contains mineral oil or alcohol.

Store Your Bag Carefully

Proper storage will extend your handbag’s life by quite a few years. A wet leather bag can lead to mildew and other damage, so always wait until it dries up. Before you put it away, stuff the compartments with bubble wrap or tissue paper, so that its shape remains intact.

Wrap all the metal buckles, chains, and tags in tissue paper, so that they don’t press against the leather and leave a mark. Most importantly, keep the handbag in its original dustbag and place it on a shelf or box with holes. Don’t forget to air it once every two weeks or so.

Use Conditioner

The problem with leather bags is that they dry out and crack over time. Prevent this from happening by treating it with conditioner or neatsfoot oil once or twice a year. Some products may darken the color of the leather, so try them in a hidden spot first. This will moisturize your handbag and keep it looking it’s shiny best.

Treat Stains Immediately

Even if you’re careful, you may find yourself dealing with stains every now and then. Treat it as soon as you can. The best and most effective way to do this is to grind ordinary chalk and apply the powder to the stain. Let it sit overnight and then brush it off.

Avoid wearing new denim jeans with a light-colored bag as dye transfer is one of the toughest stains to remove.

Most of us are used to filling our bags to the brim. Avoid doing that with your leather handbag and stick to the essentials as it can permanently alter its shape. Also, avoid heavy objects as it can strain the handles and eventually lead to stretching or tearing.

A leather handbag is a lifelong commitment. Proper care and handling will ensure that your valuable investment remains impeccable and intact for years to come!
