One universal truth about fashion is that it is often found repeating the styles of the past. Just take a look at today’s fashion trends which mainly focus on styles from the 90s era – an era that featured colorful and loosely fitted clothing such as flared jeans with a pop of color.

This is an interesting shift because only a decade ago, fashion was all about body-hugging outfits and neutral colors.

From the Film to the Catwalk

People who have lived through the 90s era can confidently confirm that the old styles are making a comeback. But recently, you may have come across a new style consisting of black leather trench coats paired with sleek and tiny sunglasses and a pair of combat boots.

This is an unusual style, but not for people who have witnessed the 1999 masterpiece “The Matrix.” “The film, which featured Keanu Reeves, was met with great success not only at the box office but also in influencing a whole generation which obviously included fashion as well.

Welcome to the World of Matrix

A sci-fi storyline narrating a tale of people trapped inside a simulated reality produced by an AI machine and how the protagonist (Keanu Reeves) unites with a team of rebels to save humanity. While the story might be intriguing, the costume design was on another level.

The costume designer Kym Barret developed a unique and signature style for the movie keeping in view the theme of the boundary-pushing film. Even then, when the movie was released, it was followed by a wave of people opting for the dressing style from their favorite film.

Resurrection of the Matrix Fashion Trend

Becoming the fourth film of the “Matrix” series, “The Matrix Resurrections” was launched on 22 December 2021, featuring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and new additions like Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra.

And once again, the costume design department of the “Matrix” franchise brought forth the sleek futuristic look of long leather trench coats, combat boots, and slick back hair with a pair of tiny sunglasses, as seen in the previous films of the same series.

For the people of the fashion world, this is a pretty big thing since the impact of pop culture, and especially this film, does not only fall on the fans of the film-  it’s also high-end designers who draw inspiration from the styles used.

The Dior’s Fall 1999 show did exactly that, and all their models donned black leather outfits that were stated to be ‘heavily inspired by The Matrix’ by John Galliano, creative director of the 1999 Dior Fall show.

Kym Barret truly aligned her visions and concepts with the theme of the film and presented the world with a style that it will probably never forget.
